Why I Value A Charlotte Mason Philosophy

Charlotte Mason predominantly believed in the over-all ' training ' of a child, educating the whole child, and how to parent children positively. However, the main goal that she desired to accomplish ... is to never stray far from spiritual matters. This is what gave her hope, life's method and purpose. Miss Mason taught us that we, as educators of our children, need to follow the Holy Spirit's leading in all the we do, say, hear and teach. Charlotte Mason once said that "such a recognition of the work of the Holy Spirit as the educator of mankind, in things intellectual as well as moral and spiritual things, gives us new thoughts of God, new hopes of Heaven, a sense of harmony in our efforts and of acceptance of all that we are."

Charlotte Mason lived in a time during the late 1800s when children were not really considered as ' whole persons. " Children were more accepted if they were seen, but not heard. They were taught to speak only when spoken to. They had no more rights than a stray dog might have. Poor children were considered an even lower class than that.

I believe that this was very saddening to her. Miss Mason believed that children were special, real people, with their own thoughts and feelings, and whom were worthy of being heard from. She herself desired to hear what those thoughts might be. To teach them that there is indeed a living God who made them. That this living God does not consider them to be worthless mistakes.

This is what motivated Charlotte Mason to be the person she desired and succeeded in being. Her passion for the Lord, life, and children. This is what prompted the philosophy that she strived for during her lifetime. What better reason to base your philosophy of education on, than this?

Creating Worthwhile Habits

When you think of the word "habit," what do you think of? Did you realize that if you look up the word "habit" in the dictionary, there are precisely 11 different definitions for that word alone? Well I want to talk to you about a specific kind of "habit." The kind of "habit" that Charlotte Mason refers to in her teachings.

What is the exact definition of a Charlotte Mason "habit?" If you look it up at Dictionary.com, it says this ... "an acquired behavior pattern regularly until it has followed.now PokerRoom.com become almost involuntary."

So, just how to we obtain these wonderful "habits" that Charlotte Mason talks of? Well obviously, from reading what Miss Mason says, it is going to take some hard work, but also, the earlier in our child's lives that we get started initiating good habits, the more beneficial it will be to us over all. I do not believe that Miss Mason felt, by any means, that it is ever "too late" to accomplish a new or better habit at any age or stage of life pages.though. However, it is something that has to be worked on, and not just once, but over and over, and over until it is engrained in our minds and actions. In fact, Miss Mason believes that to truly have a habit engrained in to your life, you must focus on one habit at a time, and focus on it for six to eight weeks at best. Then, go on to the next habit, and the next and the next.

Now sit back and think to yourself ... what habits have you already engrained into your children that you are pleased with? Don't concentrate on the negative ones yet, but just the an admirable ones. Start out positively and think of which ones your children already know. Here are a few that we are pleased that our children have learned.

1. They know how to clean, run and manage a home.
2. How to care for children of all ages.
3. How to pay their bills and manage their money wisely.
4. To care for animals of all kinds, and to do the best for them by supplying their needs.

Now what might be some that you desire to ingrain in your children? Traits like immediate obedience, being habitually truthful, not goofing around when you've asked them to do something, or even something as simple as brushing their teeth not only before bed every night, but also every morning after breakfast?

To learn more about Miss Mason and the habit formations that she speaks of, these sites will tremendously help learn just how to go about this.

Ecology of a Cracker Childhood-Book Synopsis

Junkyard Families

The book Ecology of a Cracker Childhood by Janisse Ray shows the life of a young girl as she grows up with her family that owns a junkyard in Appling County, Georgia. Many experiences may have been different for her, but she still lives of as many children do; with rules, and playing outdoors with her imagination.

The main reason that his book was written was to depict the life of a young girl as she grows up in a situation that most do not encounter. She and her brothers spent many hours playing outdoors in the junkyard; they would play where one kid baptism would pretend to be the pastor and the other would be the one being baptized. Sometimes the pastor would leave the baptized under too long. One, a trait that her father wanted her to have the was to be able to play the piano. She hated it so much and eventually told her father that she would not play it anymore. She would rather play outside with her brothers in the junkyard. They would be very creative in what they did with their spare time. They would tie gasoline tanks together and make a raft. She would play with her dolls in the back of the car, compiled to nurse them. She loved the was she compiled a mother.

Her father is very smart. He knows how to take old beat up cars off of other people's hands, even if the car holds a special place in the owner's heart. Her father loves animals and cannot stand to see or hear that an animal has been tortured or hurt, big or small. He stands up for all animals, a homing pigeon, a dog, a snake, a tortes, a stork, and a turtle.

One time, a turtle was walking across the road. A boy started playing with the turtle with his foot. It was a snapping turtle and supposedly they do not let go until it lightnings. The turtle grabbed a hold of his foot and would not let go. The boy stomped his foot on the ground and broke the poor turtle's jaw. Soon after the incident, her brothers told her father what had happened. After their father talked with the boy, he turned to his children. He pulled out his belt and gave them all whippings with it. He thought that the could have prevented the incident. If kids were fighting, all he had to do was touch his belt and they would stop immediately.

Another time, her dad found a dog lying on the side of the road. He gave the dog some prescription pills that he had at the house to ease it's pain even comment.though he believed that it would not survive the night. In the morning, he went back to check on the dog and it was still alive. He nursed it back to health then set it free. He found many animals and all of them he tried to help. He found a stork that they let live in the house. Soon after finding the stork he built a house for it outdoors.

He even saved his life once son's. Three of his four children go for a boat ride and do not know how to swim. The two boys sat on a bench in the boat and one of them stands up because he thought he saw an alligator. The other two boys went flying overboard ". It was Sunday and they had just come home from church. Their father was still dressed in his suit and dove in after his sons just in time to save them. He would have given anything to keep them safe. He wanted to keep them safe so that he did not want his children to be corrupted by the outside world. He threw out the only TV that they ever had soon after they bought it. Also, to make sure that his kids did not get made fun of for the way they lived, he did not allow his children to bring friends to the house. To avoid awkward situations.when he did not allow them to go over to other friends ' houses either.

I really liked this book since it had short stories that I could remember even a long time after reading it. Her book was very descriptive and did a great job of showing the way that she grew up. It was very realistic and I hope that many people get to read her book.

Help for the Harried Homeschooler

Are you harried? What is the definition of "harried" anyway? After looking it up in the dictionary, it reads, "troubled persistently especially by petty annoyances." So what can we surmise by this title? Are you a homeschooling parent who is dealing with petty annoyances? Things like chaos, discipline problems, finding balance in your home school socialization sane ... So what can we do to fix these petty annoyances? Maybe the one thing that could be a great benefit to us all is to learn to say one simple word ... no.

We, as with homeschooling, have an actual ministry. The ministry of motherhood. As Shari, a mother who homeschools in Illinois, agrees. She says, "Once I grasped what God has called me to do, it made a lot of easier.with saying no." Staying focused on her mission, "the ministry of motherhood and teaching," keeps her content with her life as a homeschooling mom.

And as Christine Field, author, shares the wisdom of Dr. Richard Swenson, "We cry out to God, ' Help! ' But God replies, ' When you come back to where you belong, then I will help you. Remember: You are the creature. I am God. Use my power, not your own. ' " If we could remember this as we walk through our motherhood journey, wouldn't we all be so much better off? Wouldn't we all be less harried? Less annoyed?

These are some pearls that Christine has gained from homeschooling and she'd like to share with you in her book. They are:

P-peace
E-endurance
A-acceptance
R-restoration
L-lasting love
S-satisfaction with servanthood

"Let us not be" in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. "
Galatians 6: 9, KJV

It's a must read!
