Exploring America-History Curriculum For Homeschoolers — High School

Finding a good history curriculum for high school was one of the greatest challenges I faced when I was being homeschooled. It seemed to like most of the good history books stop at the Civil War or World War II. What about modern history? It's hard to find a history book from a Christian perspective about modern history. Have you run into this problem, too? This difficulty has been organization connected with a high school history curriculum from Notgrass Company. By Ray Notgrass Exploring America is an amazing curriculum that is exciting as well as educational. It begins with Christopher Columbus and ends at the present time. Each day is broken up into short, concise lessons.

Sometimes history books seem to make the exciting events sound like nothing more than boring facts, Mr. Notgrass has an engaging writing style that makes the events come to life. There are also daily assignments that encourage the students to dig deeper. Sometimes they will read a document, speech, or hymn from American Voices, which is a 400 + page companion book that comes with the curriculum. Other times they will look up relevant Bible verses and also memorize verses. Writing assignments (including writing a research paper) are also part of the assignments. Students who finish the course will have three credits, one in history, one in English, and one in the Bible. How's that for hitting 3 birds with one stone?

This book is essential for every high school student and will give them the tools to take an in depth look at American history from a Biblical perspective. If you are looking for a really good American history high school curriculum look no further. Exploring America has filled a big gap in the history curriculum for homeschoolers —. Exploring America is the best high school curriculum for American history I have ever seen! I wish it had been around when I was in high school.

Why Short Lessons Work in a Charlotte Mason Education

How many times during a home schooling day, have you found yourself still trying to plug along to get every subject done that you feel "has" to be done before you can end your school day? Before you know it, it is 3:30 ... 04:00 ... 05:00 ... And suddenly you realize that not only is your spouse on the way home, and supper is not done, but you never even remembered to get it out of the freezer it, let alone start it?!

Plus, added to this, your house has PokerRoom.com become an upheaval in the meantime, the laundry you started before school this morning is still waiting to be thrown in the dryer, or hung on the clothesline. Your kids are grouchy and just want to go outside to play. You have a headache and can't wait to just sit and do absolutely nothing but stare at the television. But, in your spouse drives, honking cheerfully as he sees his children playing outside. He has had a long, hard, hectic day at the office, and he is so looking forward to a nice home cooked meal. He walks in, looks around, sees the upheaval of things and then has the nerve to ask, "So what's for dinner?" At this point, all you can do is sit down and cry. Your husband is at a loss as to what is wrong, let alone what he can do, or should do, to help in your situation. To top it off, he is afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing, no matter how carefully he tries to word things. Did ' school ' get done today? Yes, it did. Thank God for that! But it was done cheerfully, with anticipation, looking forward to what tomorrow will bring? Sadly, your answer would have to be an emphatic "NO!"

Well there are specific reasons why Charlotte Mason felt strongly that it was imperative that children be given ' short lessons "in a variety of subjects throughout each day. Not only is it a ENORMOUS help to the parent in not becoming overwhelmed, but it also helps you, the parent, to be able to maintain a calm, peaceful learning environment, giving you ample time to get your daily household necessities accomplished. However, ultimately, it is for the sake of your children.

Miss Mason has three simple, basic reasons for short lessons where children are concerned. Firstly, the idea that there is only so much time to get the math lesson done, or his reading finished, keeps the child's comprehension levels fixed and alert. Secondly, your child has only so much of an attention span for any one subject that he can absorb, without going in to overload. And thirdly, your child gets through his morning routine without getting bored or tired, feel exasperated by.

Now, what better reasons are there than these to continue to learn and follow more of Charlotte Mason's wonderful, yet simple lessons, that can be used in our personal, every day lives? Go to Charlotte Mason Made Easy website to see more about simple and short lessons.

Creative Home Schooling for Gifted Children by Lisa Rivero

"We home school, in the words of Annemarie Roeper, to-for life rather than simply to-for success."

In the response of the 911 bombings, when Lisa Rivero was finishing writing this book, the realization came to her of exactly how profound of a statement this actually was. She says, "I began to understand on a new level. We don't learn about architecture or read great books or study world countries in order "to home school." We home school so that we're free to learn about life in its unpredictable complexity. We home school to ask questions and to seek answers for ourselves, to put ourselves in the place another's, to begin to forge new connections and relationships for a new global community, to do our small part as citizens of the world. "

Says the author, David h. Albert, author of "And the Skylark Sings with Me: Adventures in Homeschooling and Community-Based Education," Giftedness, whether of the intellectual or other varieties, exists on a continuum like most other characteristics. "

Parents of gifted children face unique challenges that are seldom discussed or taken seriously by other parents or school personnel, "says Lisa. While parents should not PokerRoom.com become preoccupied with a child's potential nor should they organize the entire family around the gifted child, it is extremely beneficial for parents to be aware of:

(1) why their children seem different, and
(2) that the difference is real and necessitates a unique parenting and educational approaches.

I cannot adequately describe the relief I felt when I finally met other parents who, like me, were accused of being pushy when their young children taught themselves to read before school age, or who felt helpless as they watched their child's extreme sensitivity, or from and who struggled to keep up with the reasoning powers of a six-year-old asking a question a minute. "

This book and its 400 pages is a wealth of information! Chapters cover subjects such as: Traits of Giftedness, Which Needs, Social and Intellectual Needs, Learning Styles-Learning With a Difference, Creating Your Home School Approach, Your Creative Home School Toolbox, and chapters on the Paperwork, Documentation, & Testing, Special Topics, plus so much, much more.

In her book are also sections on Resources for Gifted Children, References, publishers who offer a full curriculum for gifted students, websites to help parents of gifted children, software companies, and more. If you think your child is gifted, or you are looking for support in educating your gifted child, then I would seriously recommend that you check into owning this book. I believe that you can glean a lot from it!

An Introducing Technological Change Through History With Mike Mulligan

The story of Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel, dedicated fondly known as Mary Anne, are a great conversation opener for so many topics. In a bid for a contract Mike needed to prove that Mary Anne in one day was capable of doing the work of 100 hundred men in a week. As a testimony to good old hard work, Mike and Mary Anne did exactly that but created a dilemma in the process, one that has a beautiful outcome.

One of my favourite ways to use this book is to introduce the topic of technological change over time, This book speaks into the history of engines and is a great starter book as you look into the industrial age right through to today's technology, particularly the development of modern communications technology. Poor Mary Anne was in direct competition with her more modern counterparts and had to prove her worth as an engine that appeared to have been superseded by.

Visits to historical Museum, are a must for home educators using this title. Of course, no museum is the same and each has their own key that exhibits. From the ' cheese ' Museum, that show the items that were used in historical cheese manufacture to ' transport ' Museum that look at changes in travel through to ' pastoral ' Museum that look at a historical farming equipment you can choose any one to explore technological change over time or even look at several. Then, it would be complemented by a visit to a modern equivalent. Plan into your program a trip to a cheese maker, car dealer or mechanic, or a modern farm. It would make for a great research project that compares not just the technology of each era but also the impact that this technology has on daily life for those who use it.

Another great project is to get a ' classic ' car and a late model vehicle side-by-side with their's hoods open. Then, using someone with mechanical knowledge, explore the different components of each vehicle and discuss all the extra parts in newer vehicles and design changes that have occurred in parts such as the engine. As a spin off topic, through the exploration of accessories, there could be learning directed to safety in cars. This would include discussing how seat belts, air bags, brake assistance and stability control work in a vehicle, the purpose that they serve, their effectiveness and that they as a user of transportation can keep themselves safe.

Alternate Educational Uses

This amazing book by Virginia Lee Burton opens up so many more conversations, pages.though, then just conversation over technological change, consider the following ideas.

An interesting retrospective study for older children that can come from this is on consumerism, disposable lifestyles and the waste of resources by first world nations. It can then provide a very interesting critical thinking exercise on whether it is important to care for and preserve of our possessions. This can lead to some really great hands on exercises on how to preserve different possessions. Safe storage of the products of photography, preserving timber surfaces, reupholstering and repairing furniture rather than replacing it, and researching alternate sources of household goods that are pre-loved.

Tied to this you can pull in excursions to antique stores and businesses was published by "the day in spending, tuition from an upholsterer, and learning where one can source pre-loved goods both within budget, within the house's era and how to care for them. From there, some home or communication based projects can be initiated using the skills learned through these excursions. Polishing silver, timber, restoring repairing goods. Just imagine what your child could do in aid of an elderly neighbour!

Another fantastic idea is to discuss the importance of our history, not just national history, but also that of communities and that of families. Studying one's own family history and learning lessons from our elders can bring a child's life into perspective. As a teenager, many home educated children can explain why their parents are the way they are through study of the lives of their parents parent's. This opens a door to genealogy and the lives of familial ancestors a process that will reinforce learning about national and local history for those family members.

Another totally separate thread that learning could take from this wonderful book is grounded on the dilemma that Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne faced after they completed their task. (You'll need to read the book to find out what that dilemma was). Of course, this speaks into a skill that is highly sought in workplaces and is essential to the operation of a family home-planning! This brings the opportunity to discuss the importance of planning, types of planning, how to plan, communicating your plan to others and how planning can assist in preventing dilemmas like the one that needed to be resolved in this book.

This book is a great book for a child of any age and is a great resource in the library of any parent. It's my own five star rating and I would recommend you check it out for yourself! This book crosses many societal barriers that many other titles introduce and creates a safe base to enter the topic of history with an open mind.

Answers to Questions Parents Most Often Ask-HOMESCHOOLING by Deborah McIntire & Robert Windham

Deborah McIntire has over 18 years of experience as a teacher and administrator. She has spent many years working with home-school parents as an administrator, consultant and supervising teacher.

Robert Windham has a B.A. in Psychology and M.S. in counseling '. He has taught in the parochial and public school systems and has served as a private school director. He is also a supervising teacher and has worked closely.sure-go with home-schooling parents over the years. Together, these two authors have worked with over 500 home-schooled children and their parents in the role of supervising teachers.

Over the years they have noticed a commonality of questions and concerns affecting home-schooling families. They wrote this book in hopes of addressing some of these concerns.

Have you ever asked yourself, or been asked by someone else, "How do I know if my child is learning? What factors should I consider if my child isnt reading as well as other children? How well do children adjust to the transition from a home-school setting, to a traditional school setting? What types of common learning difficulties might my child encounter? How do I match my instructional approach to the required curriculum? AND, how do I balance the demands of home schooling with the rest of my life? " Well these two authors have terms these issues and offered suggestions and help for many others. Covered here are also the legal requirements, organizational tools, evaluation procedures, and ready-to-use reproducibles.

One appealing section in this book is the scope-and-sequence charts. Many parents often have doubts as to what exactly their children need to know at each grade level. In this book you will find a broad overview of the basic concepts generally suggested or required for grades K-8 in language arts, math, social studies, and science.

As their closing remarks they say, Home educating your children is indeed a unique privilege-one that allows you to not only impart academic knowledge but wisdom the and values. Day by day as you teach math, English, and geography, you also shape attitudes that reinforce beliefs.what, and provide a safe haven in which your children can grow, question, and explore. We strongly believe that your investment in this educational process will provide lifelong dividends for you and your children, which will strengthen the family as well as the community at large. Our best wishes to you and your family in all your educational endeavors. "

Teaching Online-Home Schooling Book Review

If you are considering teaching online, or if you are a parent and would like homeschooling to have your kids learn online while at home ... then maybe you need to do a little bit of research. Maybe you need to consider what's out there, and the various hybrid courses and technology issues which surround the world of Internet courses and online teaching.

The other day, there was a very interesting article in the Wall Street Journal that discussed why there never needed to be any poor weather days that prevented school. If the inclement weather was so bad that the school buses couldn't run, or the blizzard made it impossible to get to school, then each student could learn at home on their own computer. The article made some compelling arguments, and I found similar points of contention in a book on the subject.

In fact, I'd like to go out of my way right now to recommend this book to you, and it is a book that I do own of my personal library. The name of this book is; "Teaching Online-A Practical Guide" (College Teaching Series-Second Edition) by Susan Ho and Steve Houghton Mifflin Company, Rossen, Boston, MA, (2004), 339 pages, ISBN: 0-618-29848-7.

There is a great overview of online teaching and what it's about, and although it is written from the perspective of the institutional educator, it surely a helps parents understand what they are dealing with when they choose which courses, online syllabuses, and information they wish their children to read and learn. Teaching in an online classroom is not easy, but those that have the skill and talent to pull it off, are the most desired and sought after instructors.

Why not pick up a copy of this book so you can familiarize yourself with low tech and high-tech solutions used in Internet education. You can also find discussion forums where you can interact shop with teachers, and how they use whiteboards, chatting and instant messaging features to make the online classroom feel at home. Why not learn what the teachers go through when they put together their training programs, and how they prepare themselves for their students.

It seems to me as a parent, I want to know how the online teaching system works, what type of software and hardware works the best, and how the teachers are going to interact shop with my kids. You need to know these things up front, it's very important, and that's why a recommend this book to you. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Home Schooling and Learning Communities-A Book Review

Home schooling has always been popular, and yet for a brief period in our history we didnt hear a lot about it, today, all that has changed, as home schooling is definitely back in vogue. The No Child Left Behind Act instituted under the Bush Administration with the help of the former Senator Edward Kennedy was brought forth out of frustration, as kids were actually graduating High School, but could not read or write. This of course was unacceptable, and something had to be done.

Nevertheless, the challenges and problems are systemic in nature, and so many parents want no part of our public school system; some say it's a dangerous place for kids due to gangs, drugs, violence, others say it's a giant babysitting event at the tax expense payer's. No matter where you stand you also realize that we are not meeting our educational challenges in this great nation. Constantly.perhaps, it's for this reason that you are looking for alternatives, something that works.

Well then, I was recommended a very good book to read a few years back, and I read the whole thing and was intrigued at what I learned, so much so that I've recommended it to everyone I've met thinking on the issue of education. I even placed it online in the reading room of our Internet type of think tank. The name of the book is;

"Creating Learning Communities," by Ron Miller and William n. Ellis, published by CCL-LLC and the Coalition for Self Learning Communities, eBook Digital Edition (2000).

The book talks about not only schools as learning communities, but also addresses the community as a place of on-going learning, and how groups of folks can get together and learn, mentor,-and drive knowledge, wisdom, and valuable information. This is a living book, with research on learning communities and new chapters are being added online.

The philosophy is straight forward, so too is the approach it takes. Learning should be a lifetime database records, it's not something you finish and get a diploma for, and this book is filled with resources and information, places to go to help you whether you are home schooling, or want to learn how to better teach. I'd recommend it to any and all home schooling parents and community advisors, also to educators to expand their own horizons.

Section III is all about the information age, and how computers, the Internet, and other technology devices make all this possible, and shine forward into the future. Please consider reading this book at your first possible singer. I highly recommend it.

Chapter 8 of this book talks more about daily schedules and record keeping. On average, the time required to focus on core skills (reading, math, language arts, social studies, and science) can be broken down per age group as 's:

* Preschool and teachers have: 30 to 60 minutes

Excellent Resource for Both Educators and Parents

Standardized testing is as much a part of the school today as reading and math classes. Unfortunately, although most kids eventually learn to read and do the math necessary to carry them through life, many do not learn to take the tests that SHOW they have learned the reading and math. Whether parents and teachers like it or not, the student's ability to do well on standardized tests is increasingly important, and not only to the student. Teachers and schools are judged based on student test scores. Parents and teachers need help. Attack of the Chicken Nugget Man: A National Test Prep Adventure may be just the help they need.

Written specifically for the tests, Attack of the Chicken Nugget Man: A National Test Prep Adventure is available in a format geared towards the national curriculum standards as well as some individual state tests. Aimed at grades 2-5, the book is a series of silly stories that will engage the students. The stories are followed.now by a set of questions similar to the ones found on standardized tests. These questions are written to directly correlate to specific standards such as "Grade 4 Reading Foundation Skills" or "Grade 2 Math Operations." There is a guide in the back to help the parent or teacher see which specific learning standard terms is.

Why would this book work when other teaching aids are unsuccessful? There are a few reasons why this book might be a better choice. First, the stories are quite funny and will have the students wanting to read on to the next one. Secondly, the book is extremely well organized and quite easy for adults to navigate (even if they have little of no educational background). On just a Fujita of pages in the front of the book, the author so CLEARLY how to use the book. A third plus for this book is that it appears.you should that the book would be equally helpful for use with a student who constantly.perhaps does not have trouble taking tests, but lags a little in basic concept development. In other words, this is not just a test prep book. It could also work as a booster for a student struggling with a specific concept-say Grade 3 Math, Measurement and Data or Grade 5 Speaking and Listening.

(A) the last idea for the book's usefulness is that it spans four grades worth of material. So as a parent, suppose your child has just finished grade 3. Over the summer, you could use the book to review the material for grades 2 and 3, but then in the spring, haul the book out for use with the test preparations for grade 4. Or you might even want it during the year if your student hit a bump with a given concept-say fractions. While using the same stories with different objectives, it allows the student to realize actual growth in specific areas.

Overall, the Attack of the Chicken Nugget Man: A National Test Prep Adventure by Kumar Sathy seems to be a nearly "must have" for teachers and parents alike.

So you're Thinking About Homeschooling

For those of us who are in our 30s or older, I'm sure you'll remember the popular 1980s T.V. sitcom called "The Facts of Life"? Do the names Blair Warner, Jo, Tudy, Natalie and Mrs. Garrett ring a bell? Lisa Whelchel, also known as Blair back to us when we were younger, is the author of this book. She and her husband Steve, a pastor, now live in Los Angeles, CA, and are the parents of three children homeschooling named Tucker, Haven and Clancy. What Lisa does in her book is to introduce you to fifteen months… families in fifteen months… unique situations.it who have all chosen to homeschool for different reasons, using a variety of learning methods.

So just what does and "average" or "typical" homeschooling family look like you might ask? That is a very difficult question to answer. You may find some similar features, but like a fingerprint, no two are ever the same. There are many different philosophies, curriculum options, and teaching styles as there are reasons for homeschooling. A family may be passionate about the principle approach, the Charlotte Mason method, academics have applied on-line, unschooling, traditional texts, classical education, eclectic homeschooling, video schooling, curriculum on a budget, the Sonlight curriculum, or Robertson and many, many more. As Lisa says, "The bottom line is, you have to find what works for your family. In order to do that, you need to find out what's out there. "

In this book you will have the opportunity to meet a family who homeschools while traveling, a homeschooling father, a family who has a child who struggles with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), being a military family who deals often with PCS (Permanent Change of Station orders), a single mom of two homeschooling, homeschooling in a big city, an unschooling family, and even a quiver full family with 10 children, just to name to a few.

In his forward, Michael Farris, President of Patrick Henry College, and Founder and Chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association, says this, "Lisa tells you the truth about homeschooling. She has listened to the joys and tribulations of more than a thousand home schooling families, and by taking you in to the lives of several composite families, she paints an accurate picture of the struggles you can expect and the sacrifices which may be required. But most importantly, Lisa is telling you the truth when she says that whatever the struggle, the rewards make it all worthwhile. "

Homeschooling With a Meek and Quiet Spirit

It's hard to believe that another summer has passed us by, and that before long the fall colors will begin to show us that the next season is upon us again. This be said, wouldn't it be nice to start the new school year off with a meek and quiet spirit ' '?

This book is written by Teri Maxwell, a homeschooling mother of eight children. She has been schooling her children since 1985. In her book, she asks, "Will your journey toward a meek and quiet spirit be completed upon finding the perfect spelling curriculum or deciding which me to help your child should be doing? Or does the answer lie on a different path? "

So what causes you to not demonstrate a meek and quiet spirit? We all have times when we wish we had handled something better, in a kinder way, more calmly, more sympathetically. But what caused you to not be? Can you pinpoint exactly what it was? "Possibly fear? Worry? Disorganization? Depression? "Constantly.perhaps these meek and quiet spirit robbers should be our wake-up call to the fact that the homeschooling homemaking and require hard work. They are demanding and time consuming. We are called to put forth effort and to push ourselves day after day after day. There are no free rides. " If we kick back for a day or two, or three and ignore it all, it will still be waiting for us and more! " So what can we do about this? What can we do to bring the peace in to our home that we all desire?

Firstly, what exactly does Webster's Dictionary define "meek" as: "mild of temper, soft, gentle and not easily provoked or irritated." "Quiet" according to Webster, means "peaceable, not turbulent, not giving offense, meek, mild, and contented." "So, when everything is falling in around us, we would like to be peaceable through it, just as Jesus was in the midst of the storm. When our children aren't making the academics have applied or character progress we are hoped for, we want to be content waiting for them to catch on. Why I Value A Charlotte Mason Philosophy

Charlotte Mason predominantly believed in the over-all ' training ' of a child, educating the whole child, and how to parent children positively. However, the main goal that she desired to accomplish ... is to never stray far from spiritual matters. This is what gave her hope, life's method and purpose. Miss Mason taught us that we, as educators of our children, need to follow the Holy Spirit's leading in all the we do, say, hear and teach. Charlotte Mason once said that "such a recognition of the work of the Holy Spirit as the educator of mankind, in things intellectual as well as moral and spiritual things, gives us new thoughts of God, new hopes of Heaven, a sense of harmony in our efforts and of acceptance of all that we are."

Charlotte Mason lived in a time during the late 1800s when children were not really considered as ' whole persons. " Children were more accepted if they were seen, but not heard. They were taught to speak only when spoken to. They had no more rights than a stray dog might have. Poor children were considered an even lower class than that.

I believe that this was very saddening to her. Miss Mason believed that children were special, real people, with their own thoughts and feelings, and whom were worthy of being heard from. She herself desired to hear what those thoughts might be. To teach them that there is indeed a living God who made them. That this living God does not consider them to be worthless mistakes.

This is what motivated Charlotte Mason to be the person she desired and succeeded in being. Her passion for the Lord, life, and children. This is what prompted the philosophy that she strived for during her lifetime. What better reason to base your philosophy of education on, than this?

Creating Worthwhile Habits

When you think of the word "habit," what do you think of? Did you realize that if you look up the word "habit" in the dictionary, there are precisely 11 different definitions for that word alone? Well I want to talk to you about a specific kind of "habit." The kind of "habit" that Charlotte Mason refers to in her teachings.

What is the exact definition of a Charlotte Mason "habit?" If you look it up at Dictionary.com, it says this ... "an acquired behavior pattern regularly until it has followed.now PokerRoom.com become almost involuntary."

So, just how to we obtain these wonderful "habits" that Charlotte Mason talks of? Well obviously, from reading what Miss Mason says, it is going to take some hard work, but also, the earlier in our child's lives that we get started initiating good habits, the more beneficial it will be to us over all. I do not believe that Miss Mason felt, by any means, that it is ever "too late" to accomplish a new or better habit at any age or stage of life pages.though. However, it is something that has to be worked on, and not just once, but over and over, and over until it is engrained in our minds and actions. In fact, Miss Mason believes that to truly have a habit engrained in to your life, you must focus on one habit at a time, and focus on it for six to eight weeks at best. Then, go on to the next habit, and the next and the next.

Now sit back and think to yourself ... what habits have you already engrained into your children that you are pleased with? Don't concentrate on the negative ones yet, but just the an admirable ones. Start out positively and think of which ones your children already know. Here are a few that we are pleased that our children have learned.

1. They know how to clean, run and manage a home.
2. How to care for children of all ages.
3. How to pay their bills and manage their money wisely.
4. To care for animals of all kinds, and to do the best for them by supplying their needs.

Now what might be some that you desire to ingrain in your children? Traits like immediate obedience, being habitually truthful, not goofing around when you've asked them to do something, or even something as simple as brushing their teeth not only before bed every night, but also every morning after breakfast?

To learn more about Miss Mason and the habit formations that she speaks of, these sites will tremendously help learn just how to go about this.

Ecology of a Cracker Childhood-Book Synopsis

Junkyard Families

The book Ecology of a Cracker Childhood by Janisse Ray shows the life of a young girl as she grows up with her family that owns a junkyard in Appling County, Georgia. Many experiences may have been different for her, but she still lives of as many children do; with rules, and playing outdoors with her imagination.

The main reason that his book was written was to depict the life of a young girl as she grows up in a situation that most do not encounter. She and her brothers spent many hours playing outdoors in the junkyard; they would play where one kid baptism would pretend to be the pastor and the other would be the one being baptized. Sometimes the pastor would leave the baptized under too long. One, a trait that her father wanted her to have the was to be able to play the piano. She hated it so much and eventually told her father that she would not play it anymore. She would rather play outside with her brothers in the junkyard. They would be very creative in what they did with their spare time. They would tie gasoline tanks together and make a raft. She would play with her dolls in the back of the car, compiled to nurse them. She loved the was she compiled a mother.

Her father is very smart. He knows how to take old beat up cars off of other people's hands, even if the car holds a special place in the owner's heart. Her father loves animals and cannot stand to see or hear that an animal has been tortured or hurt, big or small. He stands up for all animals, a homing pigeon, a dog, a snake, a tortes, a stork, and a turtle.

One time, a turtle was walking across the road. A boy started playing with the turtle with his foot. It was a snapping turtle and supposedly they do not let go until it lightnings. The turtle grabbed a hold of his foot and would not let go. The boy stomped his foot on the ground and broke the poor turtle's jaw. Soon after the incident, her brothers told her father what had happened. After their father talked with the boy, he turned to his children. He pulled out his belt and gave them all whippings with it. He thought that the could have prevented the incident. If kids were fighting, all he had to do was touch his belt and they would stop immediately.

Another time, her dad found a dog lying on the side of the road. He gave the dog some prescription pills that he had at the house to ease it's pain even comment.though he believed that it would not survive the night. In the morning, he went back to check on the dog and it was still alive. He nursed it back to health then set it free. He found many animals and all of them he tried to help. He found a stork that they let live in the house. Soon after finding the stork he built a house for it outdoors.

He even saved his life once son's. Three of his four children go for a boat ride and do not know how to swim. The two boys sat on a bench in the boat and one of them stands up because he thought he saw an alligator. The other two boys went flying overboard ". It was Sunday and they had just come home from church. Their father was still dressed in his suit and dove in after his sons just in time to save them. He would have given anything to keep them safe. He wanted to keep them safe so that he did not want his children to be corrupted by the outside world. He threw out the only TV that they ever had soon after they bought it. Also, to make sure that his kids did not get made fun of for the way they lived, he did not allow his children to bring friends to the house. To avoid awkward situations.when he did not allow them to go over to other friends ' houses either.

I really liked this book since it had short stories that I could remember even a long time after reading it. Her book was very descriptive and did a great job of showing the way that she grew up. It was very realistic and I hope that many people get to read her book.

Help for the Harried Homeschooler

Are you harried? What is the definition of "harried" anyway? After looking it up in the dictionary, it reads, "troubled persistently especially by petty annoyances." So what can we surmise by this title? Are you a homeschooling parent who is dealing with petty annoyances? Things like chaos, discipline problems, finding balance in your home school socialization sane ... So what can we do to fix these petty annoyances? Maybe the one thing that could be a great benefit to us all is to learn to say one simple word ... no.

We, as with homeschooling, have an actual ministry. The ministry of motherhood. As Shari, a mother who homeschools in Illinois, agrees. She says, "Once I grasped what God has called me to do, it made a lot of easier.with saying no." Staying focused on her mission, "the ministry of motherhood and teaching," keeps her content with her life as a homeschooling mom.

And as Christine Field, author, shares the wisdom of Dr. Richard Swenson, "We cry out to God, ' Help! ' But God replies, ' When you come back to where you belong, then I will help you. Remember: You are the creature. I am God. Use my power, not your own. ' " If we could remember this as we walk through our motherhood journey, wouldn't we all be so much better off? Wouldn't we all be less harried? Less annoyed?

These are some pearls that Christine has gained from homeschooling and she'd like to share with you in her book. They are:

P-peace
E-endurance
A-acceptance
R-restoration
L-lasting love
S-satisfaction with servanthood

"Let us not be" in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. "
Galatians 6: 9, KJV

It's a must read!
